Former National Energy Adminis­tration chief Zhang Guobao said that in recent years, hydro power and other new energy sectors had developed at a fast pace and drawn the international community’s attention.

US President Barack Obama cited China in his State of the Union address, saying that the United States should not be lagging behind China in new energy development.

“But, we also have our share of problems,” he added.

“Our solar energy production is ranked No.1 in the world. China’s wind generator solar power export is more than 50% of the world’s trade value and 90% of solar energy produced in China were exported to the world.”

Zhang said industry experts had urged the government to tap into the domestic market for solar power and commercialise the use of clean energy.
